Zentangle – I Am HOOKED!

June 1, 2019

Hi there. Ouma Here and I am SUPER EXCITED to bring you today’s project. Thank you so much for stopping by. Let’s dive right in!!!

This blog contains paid advertising banners and affiliate links (Shopping/Affiliate Disclosure).  Banners and affiliate links may be used at no additional cost to you.  This means that I may get paid a small commission when you shop with a company using a link I provide.

I am not paid by any company to use their products (all products used in my posts have been purchased – by me) and should this ever happen, I will disclose that in a specific post.

What’s Zentangle? Well that is an excellent question.

To be honest, I’d never even heard the term before I signed up for the Zentangle for Cardmakers class offered through Altenew Academy. Basically the Zentangle Method is a way of drawing structured patterns using combinations of lines, curves, dots etc. Sound complicated? Well, I was initially intimidated. I do not fancy myself an artist at all so I wasn’t sure how quickly I’d pick up the techniques but I was able to grasp the basics taught in the course very quickly and I was seriously hooked by the end of the first lesson.

Since the technique was new to me I did do some practicing using grid paper and a pencil before moving to a pen with grid paper and finally to the card panels you see below. I found myself becoming fascinated by the processes taught in the class. So much so that I had to pull myself away so that I could work on the cards seen below.

Above you can see my practice pages in pencil and pen.

It didn’t take me very long to find the best stamp in my collection to pair the Zentangle for Cardmakers method with. The Dotted Blooms Stamp Set seems like it was made just for this technique. The flower by itself is absolutely beautiful. I stamped the image on a piece of scrap Cardstock so that you can have a clear idea of how the stamp appears before any alterations were made.

Here you can see stamp in its original format and then after adding to the image.

Here again you can see the flower that I stamped on the inside right corner of each of the three cards featured today. The left side is before adding just a tiny addition to enhance the flower.

To create the three cards featured I started with Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock trimmed to 4 1/4 inches by 5 1/2 inches. I stamped the large flower from the Dotted Blooms Stamp set onto each panel Obsidian Black Pigment Ink.

After stamping the large flower onto each of the three card panels, they were modified by using the Zentangle methods I learned via Altenew Academy (shown in video). I used a combination of the Springkle and Zinger.

For the first card I chose a blue and grey pallet to compliment the Obsidian Black Ink. The panel was trimmed by an 1/8 of an inch on each side. Foam tape was placed on the back and is them adhered to the front of a top folding note card. The sending you my love sentiment from the set was stamped onto a piece of blue cardstock. Foam Tape was added to the back of the sentiment strip and it was placed on the card panel. For the final touch Clear gems were placed around the flower and three small hearts placed at the end of the sentiment strip.

I kept the second a lot simpler with regards to color, sticking to an all grey and black color scheme. This card uses the thank you for always being there sentiment which was stamped onto a piece of grey cardstock.

The third card is the most colorful. I chose a beautiful peach and playful bright green to add color to the flower. The sentiment is stamped onto green cardstock.

I am so happy with the way these cards turned out. I can’t wait to find more ways to incorporate Zentangle into future card projects.

I hope that you have seen something here that brought a smile to your face and has inspired you to try this technique out for yourself.

As always, don’t forget to spread kindness. – Ouma
